Apparently it's National Chocolate Cake Day!
I think the nation could be America but I won't let that stop me! So, to celebrate Chocolate Cake day (and the return of my cupcake cookbook), I am going to make some chocolate cupcakes later.
I'm not 100% sure why I always do late night baking, it's probably because I have to share the kitchen with my whole family. I NEED TO MOVE OUT.
These are my teenage diaries. The first one starts at the end of 1999 (just before I was 11) and I still have one now, although I write embarrassingly little in it.
Reading through them now is so funny and so sad. I can't believe that all these things were so long ago. I can't believe that I don't feel any different at (nearly) 22 than I did when I was 13.
I have a tiny family. My immediate family is slightly bigger than average but when you take into account that I have no living grandparents and that I never even had aunts and uncles, it is teeny tiny. This makes it really strange at any family occasion because even to our closest relations we are just random cousins who get invited to big family parties.
Today I am off to Wales for my Great Uncle's 80th birthday party. Apart from my dad, he is the closest link I have to her and all I want is to arrive and be told that I look just like her, that I have a glaring family resemblance.
So, my advice to all of you is: have more than 1 child, to avoid non-existent families and don't let your parents die when you children are young/not yet born.
This morning before I woke up I was perusing twitter (for a reason I will explain in a moment) and I came across this article via a tweet by Princess Lasertron. It is about Mormon housewife blogs, or more specifically the writer’s love for mormon housewife blogs, despite being a “young, feminist atheist who can’t bake a cupcake”.
This brings me to why I was checking twitter the second that I woke up: Naomi Davis of the Rockstar Diaries is due to have her baby at ANY TIME and I had to check she hadn’t given birth yet. Naomi is a blogger, she is a housewife and yes, she is a Mormon. In short, I was indulging my obsession with Mormon housewife bloggers when I discovered the article.
Emily Matchar so perfectly sums up what it is about these women that is so appealing, they make marriage and babies look fun. There is no preaching on these blogs and no judgement. They are just joyful and brimming with optimism. I would try to repeat the WHOLE article because it would be rather pointless. I just wanted to say that I agree wholeheartedly with what she says.
I saw Emilia Fox on Loose Women today (I don't normally watch it I promise) and I can't get over how blissfully happy she looked. It is not good for me to see women who have just had babies looking so happy and saying that they already want more!
If you remember (imaginary reader), a little while ago, and with multicoloured lettering, I said that I would not be going back to the jobcentre – in short, that I had a job.
This job was working for a Sales and Marketing company, I was told that I would be visiting businesses and pitching to them on behalf of clients, such as Sky tv and fast wax. I had two interviews for this job and they decided that I was just the kind of person they wanted. I knew that it would be a fairly crap job, no matter how they dressed it up. But one thing I was sure of was that I would not be cold calling. In the group interview I attended, another interviewee asked if it was cold calling and we were told categorically not. He asked if the company was linked to the Cobra group at all, we were told that it was nothing like that, a completely separate and different company. I knew that the job would be worse than I was being led to believe but decided that I would be able to give it a go and leave as soon as possible. At least I had been assured I would not be visiting anyone unannounced.
I start training for the job. I discover that I am being trained to sell Sky door-to-door. I discover that the office has one room beyond the reception which is covered with slogans such as “get in the door!” I am trained to start wiping my feet as I arrive to encourage people to let me into their homes. What’s more, I am made to sign documents covered with “Cobra Group”.
Here is a choice tidbit from the Wikipedia entry on the Cobra Group:
Video footage from past investigations offers proof of Cobra Group team leaders participating in bad practices such as lying to potential customers, and according to this report (in which the Cobra group is specifically named) the year 2002 saw 12000 consumer complaints against salespeople in this industry. Some past and current sales people for the company have also commented on questionable sales methods and the repercussions for the salespeople involved.
I did not return.
